An overview of our Estate Administration service
We support clients through the entire estate administration process, handling legal and tax matters so you have the peace of mind that everything has been handled correctly.
Administering a loved one’s estate can be an overwhelming responsibility during an already difficult time. At Pinney Talfourd, we understand that this process involves not only legal and financial complexities, but also personal and emotional challenges. Our Estate Administration service is designed to support you fully, guiding you through every step with clarity and expertise.
From the moment you entrust us with your estate administration, we become more than your legal advisor – we become your steadfast partner. We handle all aspects of estate administration on your behalf, providing a seamless and comprehensive service that gives you reassurance at a difficult and emotional time.
Our service begins by meeting with you to establish a clear understanding of the estate. We carefully review the Will, if there is one, and advise on the responsibilities and duties that come with administering an estate. If there is no Will, we help you navigate the intestacy rules, ensuring the estate is distributed to those who are legally entitled to receive it, even if their identity and whereabouts is initially unknown. We deal with registering the death with the relevant financial organisations and government departments, arrange the payment of all taxes, obtain a Grants of Probate or Letters of, collect the estate assets and distribute the estate to the beneficiaries.
Collecting, valuing, and safeguarding estate assets is a task we handle with precision and care. These might include property, savings, investments, and personal belongings. We ensure all items are accounted for accurately and valued fairly, arranging professional valuations where required. Equally important is managing and settling any outstanding debts or liabilities, including funeral costs, taxes, and creditors’ claims, with thoroughness and transparency.
Throughout the process, we liaise with HMRC submitting all necessary tax returns and ensuring compliance with Inheritance Tax rules. We fully claim available reliefs and exemptions to maximise the value of the estate for the estate beneficiaries. Our role is to make sure this technical part of estate administration is executed efficiently, reducing risks of delays or HMRC penalties and interest.
Our commitment to communication is a defining feature of our service. We provide regular, clear updates tailored to your preferences, so you always know where matters stand. We welcome your questions and concerns and take time to explain legal and financial matters in straightforward terms, avoiding confusion and jargon.
Complex situations such as disputes between beneficiaries or claims against the estate do arise, and when they do our expert team steps in to navigate these sensitively and effectively – always prioritising resolutions that protect your wellbeing and the deceased’s wishes.

Understanding the full Estate Administration process: guiding you confidently through probate and beyond
Estate Administration is a sensitive and often complex process requiring careful, methodical management. At Pinney Talfourd, we take pride in guiding you and your family through every stage with patience, professionalism, and a thorough understanding of the challenges involved. While each case is unique, our meticulous approach covers all essential steps to ensure a smooth and legally compliant administration.
The journey begins with registering the death with the relevant financial organisations and government departments. We identify and secure the estate assets. This requires careful investigation to identify and freeze all bank accounts, and value investments, property, personal possessions and any business interests. We work with professional valuers and estate agents if necessary to ensure assets are correctly valued as at the date of death.
We arrange the payment of any Inheritance Tax before applying to the Probate Registry for a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration (if there is no Will).
Once a Grant of Representation has been issued by the Probate Registry, we deal with the closure of the bank accounts and the sale or transfer of investments and property to the beneficiaries.
We identify and arrange payment of all outstanding liabilities. We undertake a thorough review to establish all debts, including mortgages, loans, credit card balances and any taxes owed. Handling creditor claims promptly and accurately protects the estate from future complications.
Interaction with HMRC is an essential part of our service. We prepare and submit an Inheritance Tax return if necessary and arrange the payment of tax. Our expertise means we maximise all available tax allowances and reliefs, preserving as much of the estate’s value for beneficiaries as possible. Should any complex tax issues arise, we have the experience to resolve them efficiently.
During an administration, Income Tax and Capital Gain Tax liabilities may arise. We deal with the reporting of these to HMRC and arrange the payment of tax. Throughout the administration period, we maintain transparency and open lines of communication. We provide detailed progress reports, explain important decisions, and consult you before taking any significant steps. Our approach ensures you are never in the dark and that your interests and those of the beneficiaries remain central at all times.
Finally, we prepare and issue detailed estate accounts showing all transactions carried out during the estate administration period. This ensures beneficiaries are clear how their legacy has been calculated. Once the estate accounts have been approved, we arrange payments to the beneficiaries.
Sometimes, administration can be complicated by disputes, questions over the validity of a Will, or claims from potential beneficiaries. We act as your trusted advisors in these matters, offering pragmatic, empathetic guidance aimed at resolving conflicts amicably wherever possible.
Pinney Talfourd’s team is recognised for its meticulous attention to detail, proactive problem-solving, and unwavering commitment to client care. Our Legal 500 ranking reflects our high standards not only in the legal work we undertake but in the client experience we provide.
Choosing us means choosing peace of mind. We understand you are entrusting us with something deeply important, and we honour that trust by delivering a service characterised by professionalism, empathy, and reliability.
